The operation, spearheaded by Interpol and Afripol, in collaboration with global law enforcement agencies and private sector cybersecurity firms, targeted a range of cybercrimes, including ransomware, business email compromise (BEC), and digital fraud.
The crackdown, which spanned several months, resulted in the dismantling of extensive criminal networks and the recovery of millions of dollars in stolen funds. Nigeria, in particular, emerged as a significant hub for cybercrime, ranking fifth in the World Cybercrime Index. The country has long battled the negative stereotype associated with the infamous “Nigerian Prince” scams, but the reality is far more complex and insidious.
Other African nations, including Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa, have also experienced a surge in cyberattacks, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity measures and international cooperation.
