The closed-door summit drew a high-profile consortium of state officials, tech executives, academic heavyweights, and civil society leaders to address a mounting wave of systemic cybersecurity risks threatening global supply chains and digital stability.
The two-day summit, convened on February 3 and 4, featured diplomatic heavy-hitters, including delegations from the European Union, the African Union, EU Cyber Direct, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Key regional anchors like South Africa, Ghana, and Mauritius sent high-ranking representatives, while a diplomatic contingency led by the ambassadors of Austria and Italy anchored the European presence. Operating under “Track 1.5” protocols, the discussions blended official state objectives with unvarnished private-sector expert analysis, bypassing traditional bureaucratic gridlocks.
The talks opened with a strategic roadmap laid out by Professor Kanshu Rajaratnam and Noëlle van der Waag-Cowling, senior leadership at the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking. The stress-test scenario exposed critical vulnerabilities in current emergency protocols and carved out a blueprint for future capital investments in tech defenses.
To anchor the theoretical risks in physical reality, the delegation concluded the summit with an inspection of a critical submarine cable landing station on South Africa’s West Coast. The briefing focused heavily on the physical vulnerabilities of the undersea infrastructure that dictates global financial data flows and international connectivity.
For African nations looking to hedge against rising digital threats, the dialogue serves as a direct pipeline to European capital.
