Johannesburg: As the year draws to a close, businesses are facing a surge in cyber threats, particularly Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks. With employees often overburdened and distracted during the festive season, cybercriminals see an opportunity to exploit these vulnerabilities.
Mukondeleli Masiza, a Complex Claims Handler at Allianz Commercial South Africa, warns that the increased workload and festive distractions make companies more susceptible to BEC scams. These sophisticated cyberattacks involve infiltrating email systems to trick employees into authorizing unauthorized transactions.
“The South African business landscape, with its diverse industries and extensive digital networks, is particularly vulnerable to these attacks,” Masiza said.
To combat this growing threat, Masiza recommends several preventive measures:
- Cybersecurity Awareness: Educate employees about BEC tactics and the importance of skepticism when dealing with unexpected email requests, especially those involving financial transactions. Regular training and phishing simulations can help reinforce these practices.

Despite these preventive measures, no security system is foolproof. Masiza advises businesses to consider investing in cyber insurance to mitigate financial losses resulting from cyberattacks.
