Cape Town – As the world marks Cyber Security Awareness Month, the South African property sector finds itself increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks. With the rapid digitization of real estate transactions, the potential for cybercrime is growing at an alarming rate.

Jackie Smith, Head of Buyers Trust, a leading provider of secure deposit solutions for homebuyers, warns that the industry’s traditional practices often leave it exposed to cyber threats. “The sector is still largely reliant on manual processes and paper-based transactions, making it an easy target for cybercriminals,” she says.

South Africa’s position as a global cybercrime hotspot further exacerbates the problem. Recent data from Checkpoint revealed a significant surge in cyberattacks across Africa, with South Africa bearing the brunt. The increasing prevalence of sophisticated cyberattacks, fuelled by the rise of artificial intelligence, poses a serious threat to both individuals and businesses.

One of the most common cyber threats facing the property sector is phishing attacks, where fraudsters trick individuals into divulging sensitive information such as bank details and passwords. In a recent high-profile case, a homebuyer lost over R5.5 million after falling victim to a phishing scam.

The issue of cybercrime insurance also remains a major concern. Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the property sector are unaware of the importance of cyber insurance and the potential financial implications of a data breach.

To mitigate these risks, Smith urges property professionals to adopt a proactive approach to cybersecurity. This includes implementing strong password policies, regularly updating software, and educating employees about the latest cyber threats.

“The property industry needs to embrace technology and leverage innovative solutions to enhance security. Proptech tools, such as Buyers Trust, can help to streamline processes and reduce the risk of fraud,” she says.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, it is imperative for the property sector to stay ahead of the curve. By prioritizing cybersecurity, the industry can protect its clients, safeguard its reputation, and ensure the smooth running of property transactions.
