“The move towards renewable energy globally is reshaping the role of minerals, particularly copper, in the energy mix,” says Arjen de Bruin, CEO of OIM Consulting. “Copper is fast becoming the cornerstone of the ‘renewable energy revolution.'” This surge in demand, coupled with the increasing computational demands of AI, necessitates a significant overhaul of Africa’s data center landscape.
“The ‘AI efficiency paradox’ – balancing AI’s computational needs with sustainability – is a critical challenge,” de Bruin warns. Addressing this requires innovative cooling solutions, such as liquid cooling, and a strategic shift towards renewable energy sources to power data centers.
Furthermore, the success of AI implementation hinges on human capital. “Technology alone is not enough,” de Bruin emphasizes. “Empowering supervisors with the skills to manage change and lead effectively is crucial.” This requires significant investment in workforce development programs to ensure that the African workforce is equipped to navigate the complexities of the AI era.

African nations must prioritize the development of high-performance computing infrastructure capable of handling the immense computational demands of AI. This includes investing in cutting-edge technologies that can support extreme rack densities while minimizing environmental impact.
