Africa has solidified its position as a frontrunner in shaping the global digital landscape, with its recent achievements in cybersecurity and digital transformation. The continent’s pivotal role in the development of a new United Nations Convention on Cybercrime is a testament to its commitment to fostering a secure and interconnected world.

The Ad Hoc Committee established by the UN General Assembly, under the chairmanship of Algeria, an African Union Member State, has successfully drafted a comprehensive international convention to combat cybercrime. This landmark agreement aligns with the African Union’s vision of a robust legal framework for cybersecurity at a global level.

Recognizing the transformative power of emerging technologies and the need to protect citizens’ rights, Africa has taken proactive steps to develop its digital infrastructure. The African Union Convention on Cybersecurity and Personal Data Protection, adopted in 2014, provides a solid foundation for safeguarding individuals’ privacy and security in the digital age.

In 2024 alone, Africa has made significant strides in shaping its digital future. The African Common Position on the application of International law to use ICTs in Cyberspace, endorsed by the AU Peace and Security Council, outlines the continent’s approach to navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital world. Additionally, the Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the African Digital Compact, both anchored in the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa, demonstrate the continent’s commitment to harnessing the potential of emerging technologies for development.

Africa’s leadership in cybersecurity and digital transformation is a testament to its forward-thinking approach and its determination to shape a global digital landscape that is inclusive, equitable, and secure. As the world continues to evolve, Africa’s voice and contributions will be increasingly essential in ensuring a safe and prosperous digital future for all.
