African organisations are taking a stand against cyber threats, but a new report reveals they’re entering the battle with blunt swords. KnowBe4’s 2024 Security Culture Report for Africa paints a picture of a continent with moderate preparedness, scoring an average of 72 – a mark unchanged from the previous year.
This “moderate” grade shouldn’t mask the progress being made. Kenya (76), Nigeria (75), and Ghana (74) are leading the charge, with robust strategies backed by their governments. Ghana’s impressive climb in the Global Cybersecurity Index is a testament to the region’s growing commitment to digital safety.
But beneath the surface, there are worrying cracks. The report highlights significant variations between sectors. The Kenyan banking sector stands tall with a score of 83, while public services, construction, education, and hospitality lag behind. This exposes a critical need for targeted interventions to boost cybersecurity awareness in these vulnerable areas.
Africa’s fight is further complicated by a unique set of challenges. A youthful population poised to dominate the global workforce by 2100 presents both opportunity and risk. Rapid technological advancements create fertile ground for cybercrime, while limited resources and a lack of cyber awareness make the continent more susceptible.
The upcoming South African elections serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online. The CSIR anticipates a surge in cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure and government bodies. This urgency underscores the need for a multi-pronged approach.
“Collaboration between governments and regulators is essential,” says Javvad Malik, lead security awareness advocate at KnowBe4. “We need to move beyond just creating laws and show practical ways to strengthen security culture.”
The answer lies in people, not just padlocks. Organisations must prioritise continuous employee education and awareness training. Gone are the days of isolated security measures. In today’s interconnected world, a single mobile device in a remote corner can be the chink in the armour. Africa is taking a stand in the cybersecurity war, but the fight is far from over. By fostering a culture of awareness, collaboration, and proactive risk management, the continent can build a more resilient digital future.
